Dario: Why do you catch taxis everywhere you go Brian?
Brian: I hate walking and I am lazy so I just catch cabs.
Dario: Have you ever thought about riding a bike instead?
Brian: Why would I do that?
Dario: You could save some money, get some exercise and enjoy the wind in your face as you ride along.
Brian: You make riding a bike sound very attractive, but I am much too lazy.
Dario: What‘s so great about taxis?
Brian: The drivers are always interesting to talk to. I can practice my English and get all of the latest news and gossip for free!
Dario: That‘s a good way of looking at it, but I think I will stick with my bike.
Brian: Each to their own Dario. That‘s what makes life so interesting!
1) Glum: sad, depressed
When it rains on the weekend I feel glum, so I go to bed and read a romance novel.
2) Blue: glum, sad, depressed
My friends asked me to go to a party, but I was feeling too blue to go.
3) Shindig: party, fun event
My whole class decided to have a shindig to celebrate our graduation – it was a real blast!
4) Gift: present
Gifts are a nice way of showing how much you like or appreciate someone.
5) Host: the person organizing the party or for whom the party is thrown
It‘s polite to thank the host for inviting you to a party.
Everyone has birthdays at least once a year – except for people born on February 29 who only have a birthday once every four years. No matter what age you are, birthdays are not a time for feeling blue or glum, but a great excuse for a wild party.
If you are invited to a birthday party, you should take a small gift for the birthday boy or girl. If the party is to be held at their house, it is polite to take something to drink, either soft-drinks like Coke or Sprite or alcohol such as beer or wine.
At some stage during the party, everyone will sing Happy Birthday to the birthday boy or girl. It is polite to sing along with everyone even if you don‘t know the words very well.
Some birthday parties have a special theme, meaning that you should wear something that matches the theme. Many people don‘t like to dress in silly or funny clothes because they think they will be embarrassed. But it will be more embarrassing if you are the only one at the party who didn‘t!
Jeff: Wasn‘t last night‘s party fantastic?
Joan: I had a great time but I didn‘t really know the host.
Jeff: It was his birthday. That‘s why he was having the party.
Joan: I feel so embarrassed! I should have taken a present.
Jeff: It‘s OK not to take a present if you don‘t know the person or if they didn‘t invite you directly.
Joan: Oh good. For a moment there I thought I had made a big mistake.
Jeff: The only big mistake you made was not studying English enough!
Joan: But with your help I know that I can fix that mistake as well!
Jeff: That‘s what friends are for!
1) Swat-up: study, usually studying for an exam at the last minute
My teachers say it is best to study a little each night and not try to swat-up right before the exams.
2) All-nighters: staying up all night to study
When I was younger, I could do all-nighters without any problem, but now I get too tired and fall asleep!
3) Chill: relax and hang-out
I cannot chill unless all of the housework is done and some music is playing softly in the background.
4) Funky: music that you can dance easily to
James Brown is the Godfather of funky music.
Jessie: When you listen to romantic songs do you sometimes cry?
Tina: All the time! The sad words and music can break my heart.
Jessie: What do you think is the most romantic song?
Tina: I always cry when I hear Celine Dion singing the song from the Titanic movie.
Jessie: I cry when I hear that song too.
Tina: What is your favorite romantic song?
Jessie: Well, how about I sing it for you? The song tells us a story of a husband and wife who fall in love for the second time.
Tina: Let me get comfortable and you can begin.
